Animals on Campus

If an animal appears to be a danger, is injured or may be injured, call the Sonoma State Police Department at (707) 664-4444. 

If an animal is posing a threat to people or animals, dial 9-1-1. 

Policy 

The University recognizes that individuals may bring their Domestic, Service, or Assistive Animals to campus and that Wild or Feral Animals may use campus grounds as their habitat. This policy is intended to prioritize the safety and health of students, employees and visitors, and animals as it relates to animals on University property. 

Animals may not enter any non-residential campus building with the exception of Service Animals and other exceptions as set forth herein. 

Dogs must be under control while on any campus grounds, restrained by a leash that does not exceed six (6) feet in length and in the possession of the animal's handler.

Sonoma State Police Department responsibilities include:

  • Issuing citations, giving warnings and writing reports as they relate to current law and criminal acts involving animals
  • Investigating reports of animal bites in collaboration with Sonoma County Animal Services
  • Collaborating with EH&S, Facilities and other campus departments, state and county agencies to evaluate public health situations
